The art of Kondapalli Bommallu (wooden toys) is a 400-year-old tradition from Kondapalli, a village near Vijayawada in Andhra Pradesh. These toys are globally renowned for their vibrant colors, intricate detail, and sustainable, eco-friendly nature.
The Artisan Community
The craft is primarily practiced by a community known as the Aryakshatriyas (or Nakarshalu). According to legend, they trace their origins to a sage named Muktharishi, who was blessed with artistic skills by Lord Shiva. Historically, it is believed this community migrated from Rajasthan to the Kondapalli region in the 16th century and flourished under the patronage of local kings.
